La última carta de Carrión y su diario de enfermo

En el presente trabajo se confronta la última carta conocida de Daniel Alcides Carrión escrita ocho días antes de su muerte, en donde figuran importantes datos de su enfermedad, con el contenido de su diario de enfermo. Se señalan las coincidencias y las discrepancias.

1. En el diario, la enfermedad que aqueja a Carrión se inicia la tarde del 17 de setiembre de 1886 con ligero malestar y dolor en la articulación tibiotarsiana izquierda. En la carta consigna una versión diferente en la que su enfermedad se inicia dos días después, el 19, con fiebre y escalofrío.

2. Tanto en el diario como en la carta figura el día 19 de septiembre de 1886 como especialmente álgido. En ambos se registran la presencia de intensos escalofríos y elevada fiebre.

3. Tanto en el diario como en la carta figura la remisión de la fiebre.

4. En la carta, Carrión cree que ha adquirido paludismo. En el diario no hay referencia sobre sus hipótesis diagnósticas. 11 días después de iniciada su enfermedad postula que padece de la verruga peruana.

5. El mismo día que escribió la carta en el diario encarga a sus compañeros que continúen el registro de su enfermedad por sentirse muy extenuado. Pero el tenor y la extensión de la carta no reflejan tal deterioro.

Abstract

In the present study we confront Daniel Alcides Carrion’s last letter – written eight days before his decease which contains several details about his health condition—with his illness diary. Wehigh light the similarities and differences.

1. In the diary, Carrion’s disease started in the afternoon of September 17 th 1885 with a mild discomfort and pain on the left upper anklejoint. According to the letter, the illness started two days later with fever and chills.

2. Both the diary and the letter mentioned September 19th 1886 as a critical day. Both of them registered severe chills and high fever.

3. Both the diary and the letter mentioned that the fever eventually decreased.

4. In the letter, Carrion mentioned that he believed he contracted malaria. The diary did not contain any diagnostic hypothesis until 11days after the beginning of his illness, where Carrion stated that he firmly believed he suffered from the Peruvian wart.

5. On the same day that Carrion wrote the letter,he reported in the diary that he was too exhausted to continue keeping record of the disease, so he delegated this task to his colleagues. How ever, the style and extension employed in the letter did not reflect his deteriorated condition.
