EL TEMPLO EN LA ALDEA: EXCAVACIONES ARQUEOLÓGICAS EN UNA ESTRUCTURA CEREMONIAL DEL PERIODO INICIAL EN EL SITIO DE GRAMALOTE

En este artículo se presentan los resultados de las excavaciones realizadas en el sector noreste del sitio de Gramalote, donde se registró una estructura ceremonial que ya había sido previamente excavada en la década de 1970. Nuestros trabajos lograron definir la planta arquitectónica de este edificio y, más importante aún, indagar sobre las actividades realizadas en su interior, así como en sus alrededores. El análisis de la arquitectura, materiales recuperados y comparación con otros edificios contemporáneos sugieren que la estructura ceremonial de Gramalote fue un edificio que condensa varias tradiciones arquitectónicas que vienen desde el Precerámico y que, al parecer, se trataría de una iniciativa local de los pescadores de Gramalote por realizar sus propias actividades ceremoniales, desligadas de cualquier posible actividad ritual de sitios como los edificios piramidales de Caballo Muerto en el valle medio de Moche. Esta conclusión sugiere que Gramalote mantuvo una independencia religiosa de sus contemporáneos edificios monumentales en el valle medio y que tuvo además su propia agenda religiosa centrada en ceremonias locales asociadas a sus actividades pesqueras.

Abstract

This article shows the results of the archaeological excavations in the northeast sector of Gramalote where it was exposed a ceremonial facility that was previously partially excavated in the 1970s. Current research was able to document the architectural layout of this compound and, more importantly, the activities performed in and around this building. A careful study of the architectural features, artifacts found inside and a detailed comparison with other contemporaneous buildings suggest that the temple of Gramalote has several architectural traditions from the Late Preceramic Period and the Initial Period. It seems to be a local initiative made by local fishermen to perform their own local rituals which seems to be independent from any other ceremonial activity done at the contemporaneous monumental ceremonial center of Caballo Muerto located in the mid Moche Valley. This conclusion suggests that Gramalote was ideologically independent from Caballo Muerto and possibly it had its own local religious agenda, centered in ceremonies and rituals to improve the ocean productivity.
